Dubai’s Influence as a Retail Hub

Experience-Driven Spaces, Blending Retail with Hospitality, and Sustainable Design

The Middle East has long been establishing itself as a global leader in retail and hospitality design. Through visionary developments and mega projects, technological advancements, and an emphasis on luxury and experience-driven spaces, the region continues to set trends that influence markets worldwide.

In particular, Dubai’s transformation from a small trading port to a global retail giant has been nothing short of spectacular. The city boasts some of the world’s most impressive shopping malls, hotels and multi-purpose destinations. These centers are not just about offering one thing, but rather a combination of entertainment, hospitality, and leisure – delivered through intelligent and immersive experiences.

Luxury brands have also found a natural home in Dubai, attracted by its high-spending consumer base and a tax-free shopping environment.

We’ve been fortunate to work with clients like Charlotte Tilbury, Myriam K, The Social Pup and Varsity in Dubai, Riyadh, Bahrain and Kuwait to bring some of our most ground-breaking concepts to life in a market where true innovation thrives. For us, the Middle East is often one of the most exciting places to work because of its constant redefinition of space design with cutting-edge concepts that blend retail and hospitality into immersive and sustainable experiences.

This is exemplified by the market’s focus on:

Experience-Driven Spaces

Malls and stores in the region prioritise entertainment and interactivity. Retail spaces integrate augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and AI-driven personalisation to enhance customer experiences, while incorporating entertainment by featuring art installations, live performances, and interactive zones. Our design for the Myriam K salon concept in Dubai needed to be a show-stopping blend of social media heaven, multiple service areas, and an aesthetic that would break the mold of Dubai’s predictably ‘luxe’ aesthetic salon scene. The one-of-a-kind space creates a distinct and memorable experience that combines elements of a traditional salon, paying specific attention to the modesty requirements for the region, with a café, NFT bar, DJ booth, photo booth, hair extension wall and personalised style advice. The result is a space that feels ground-breaking and fun, for some of the most demanding and fashion forward clients in the world. The opening was featured in Vogue Arabia and Emirates Woman shortly after launch.

Sustainability and Smart Design

Many developments focus on green building initiatives, such as the use of biomimicry & biophilic design, eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient lighting and smart technologies that optimize energy use. Our global retail concept for the quiet luxury brand, Varsity, is being rolled out across multiple locations in the Middle East and focuses on the highest levels of craftmanship, quality and sustainability across everything they do. Every element of the materiality, functionality and lighting were considered in making sure the space mirrors the high quality minimalist style of the brand, while being intelligently adaptable for storage and multiple use cases. The stores also provide resources to educate the customer in product care and maintenance, including a flexible bespoke cap cleaning station.

Blending Retail with Hospitality

Designs often incorporate traditional retail elements with contemporary hospitality offers and aesthetics, creating unique and diverse shopping environments. Our concept for The Social Pup took inspiration from both retail and hospitality to create a one-stop-shop dog destination in Riyadh that could cater to the growing demand for pet-centric days out. The space offers a 360 destination for dogs and their owners, featuring a range of amenities including a park, play centre, gift shop, cafe, grooming salon, dog boarding facility, and vet clinic. From playtime, to grooming and shopping, this dynamic destination levels up expectations from dog-friendly to dog-centric.

The Future of Retail

Dubai and the Middle East continue to push boundaries in retail and interior design. The focus on experience, hospitality and sustainability ensures that the region remains at the forefront of global design trends. As the region grows in influence, Dubai and its neighbours will continue to redefine tradition in retail design, influencing global trends and setting new benchmarks for innovation and luxury.

Shaping the Future of Indian Retail

India’s retail landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by a surge in experiential shopping, the influence of younger Gen Z consumers, the evolution of luxury retail, and the integration of technology. At Formroom, we’ve had the privilege of contributing to this evolution through our design of Azorte, the flagship store and first brand world for Reliance Retail. This project exemplifies the dynamic shifts in Indian retail and offers insights into the future of store design in the country.
